Topic: EVE Online

A few of us decided to check out EVE Online again, even before they got in avatars. I don't know what will happen, or whether the game as it is can hold our interest, but we've made our chars and some of us have teamed up already.

Right now, Kryigerof, Nuala and myself are playing, but quite a few people have expressed some interest in EVE, not only because of the avatars coming up. If you want to give EVE a chance now, check it out smile There's 14 days of free trial, and there's RP to be had with us. If we loose interest because we only have our ships, then we can just unsubscribe and wait until they get in avatars and try again.

So, how about joining us in space? smile Find us on the IRC to discuss how to meet up/how our chars know each other.

Re: EVE Online

I'll be joining you shortly. Tomorrow, I think.

RP in MMOG's looks like this when trying to base it on in-game activities:
"Let's go <activity>!"
"Yay, <activity>!"
"<motivation>!"

Re: EVE Online

This had to happenh at a point in my life where I don't have enough time to go back to EVE...

If you're playing it in two months, expect to have me joining. RP was the only thing missing from EVE to make it the perfect MMOG as far as I'm concerned. Hope it works out well.

Re: EVE Online

Kryigerof, Nuala, Wheri, Quanto, Dustman and myself are playing or will start playing now. I think Miho might be tempted to check it out too.

We still lack finding together ICly all of us, but no hurry I hope smile As for two months.. Who knows, but if not in two months, then in 12 again. This game is definately good, but without interaction/RP, it will grow boring, like it did for me the first time. EVE is very much geared towards playing together for most fun, and not the solo-runner smile

Re: EVE Online

Of course. I'll check it out sometime later this week (probably not untill friday but maybe before).

Re: EVE Online

Old subject, but depends on how you define RP.
I know Maagaard played EVE on a high level, where everybody had a role in a giant corp, You had duties twice a week, to mine for the corp and in exchange they could supply you with everything you needed, in case you got killed. The big corperation conquered key locations of space where vital minerals were to be found and dominated the mining efforts of there minerals, deciding the price for everyone else. Pirates tried to take out their miners, so CAP patrols had to be arranged to cover the mining efforts and escorts for the convoys taking the minerals back to station - just like you would imagine it would be in real life.
He once told me of a large corp vs corp war where they set out of hundres of ships on a journey that took weeks, where everyone had a role in the fleet. Some were forward scouts, some were supply carriers and such. And everybody had a role in battle.
If a particular engagement didnt fall out in favor of their fleet, a small number of individuals had the task to stay behind and give their lives so the fleet could escape.

All in all, i would say the game in general provides a nice setting for RP, where as games such as WOW doesnt. Its true that on the 1v1 level, RPing might be minimal(thats up to the individual), but the grand Corperation domination and conflict is unmatched, with plenty of room for politics, schemes, betrayel and drama.

Re: EVE Online

And I'm in too, trial for now, but probably more, with the summer to come and such!

Re: EVE Online

Looks like Darky forgot to mention there's an OOC channel "Seed" up and running in the game, just to have a place to hang out until we meet IC.

Re: EVE Online

Well.... Ill be in touch once we hit summer holidays... that would be Juli. At least Ill try the free trial.

Frankly, I always felt the opposite--that Eve had just about no real RP. There's no storyline to integrate into--it's all just an excuse to release new technology. You can ignore it. The corp/alliance wars are just that--wars. No purpose except to control space, so you can get rich. And you use the wealth to fight better. It's just a hack 'n slash.

But then again, I don't think any MMOG has much RP potential. Text MUSHes is where the RP is. Easily 10x more RP going on there than any other MMOG, which is why I gave them up.

BTW, I think I had 53mil SP when I quit Eve, just behind Dr. Caymus smile

Re: EVE Online

if we look only at mmorpgs and dont consider mushes ect I do think that eve provides a nice setting - of couse it also helps that I love sci-fi settings in general...

if we look at the current games out there I guess that SoR, roma victor and eve are the ones that provides the best in-game tools and setting to roleplay in...but you are right they are far from being perfect to rp in. What is missing is gm's and a greater chance are influencing the game itself.

Re: EVE Online

Coming from a MUD stint myself, I can safely say that the right MUD's and MUSH'es have so deep and complete RP that it feels completely different trying out a MMOG again. MMOG's as a medium are simply much worse at stimulating RP than a MUD or MUSH. They on the other hand, are as close to pen and paper RP as you can get, so of course they will be the 'ultimate' RP experience possible in an online form. At least that's what I experienced. The closer a MMOG is to a MUD/pen and paper RP, the better it is. Ability to do whatever your char wants to do, ability to affect and move the storyline, real GM's who make stories around you and others, and NO OOC'ers at all. That would be wonderful in any game. MUD's/MUSH'es are where this is at. Ah, and of course Live Action or Pen and Paper RP.

As for MMOG's that provide the best tools and setting for RP.. Well. EVE doesn't provide any tools and lacks avatars, but it is a great setting to RP in for sure. SoR right now lacks RP'ers and the developers are not taking the world anywhere, nor do you have any influence over the storyline.  Roma Victor I haven't tried, but to me it looks like Adellion or Fallen Earth are the only upcoming stars on the MMOG horizon. Fallen Earth have designers who come from MUD's too. These two are hardly mainstream MMOG's, nor will they grow big. EVE however is pretty big and mainstream, which is impressive. They've come far with their vision.

I hope it's possible to RP meaningfully in EVE, create stories and so, but I am a little sceptical about that aspect, with or without avatars. However, as Mecha says, there's a lot of RP in politics, strategy, etc. in EVE. That has huge potential. And as Zhiroc says, behind all that, it's a race to gain more money so you can buy more, equip more pilots, and fight more. That is at the core of corporation and alliance gameplay in EVE. Gain skillpoints and earn ISK, to be able to earn more ISK and to fight. But then again, isn't that the formula for most if not all MMOG's? EVE is unique in that it provides what Mecha describes at least, and with RP you can make it even better. However, RP takes the second seat, or is 'tacked onto' this structure, it doesn't feel natural, integrated into the game right now. Probably because the game lacks tools. These will come with the avatars hopefully.

Re: EVE Online

Just want to say thanks for the RP in Eve tonight... not having been part of SoR and not having played any muds/mushe'es with you all it was really nice to get to RP with you again smile
