Topic: NWN2

...is out on the 31st.

Who's up for headbashing around a persistent world concept and testing out the toolset in early November? I just preordered the game.

I have some experience with the Aurora (NWN1) toolset and I have some pretty hefty ideas for a game world concept that's rather far from the clichés of the Forgotten Realms. At least one talented scripter and some game builders would be necessary. I can script, but I'm not very good at it. We should probably define the builder team so that the people outside it don't have to learn all the juicy secrets of the world. wink

Who's with me?

Re: NWN2

I'm willing to help in any way I can, I'm just not sure if I'm any good at any of these things.

But just give me a yell.

Re: NWN2

Well, coding is fun so if I have time, count me in.

Re: NWN2

I am all for it as well.

I havent tried the nwn1 toolset that much, but i figure i should be able to do both some scripting and help make the world as well.

But really, there is no need to rush this imo. It will be a while before people figure out exactly how to set up some perma worlds etc.

Re: NWN2

Oluf: Yep, but if we've got enough people interested in this, I intend to keep up-to-date with the community.

For those who want to know more about the NWN community and the modifications of NWN, http://nwvault.ign.com/ is a great place to look.

Re: NWN2

Ah, the old good "Aurora Toolset", hope they will have enchanced the underlying mechanisms so we could have backgroudn tasks runnign without needing a PC around : it would greatly help for (semi-)persistent behaviours and/or sceneries.

Re: NWN2

Heh... yes... I also hope the parser is smart enough that the whole damned game doesn't choke if you use too many variables, like it did in the original.

Re: NWN2

Btw - to those of you who preorder please remember to let us all know if the game is worth playing (and paying for) after you have tried it wink

Re: NWN2

Oh, you'll hear all about it on IRC, I'm sure. wink

If we're going to use it to make our own game, how much will it matter if the single player campaign sucks?
If you mean the controls and graphics and such, I'll probably mention those very loudly if I dislike them.

Re: NWN2

Controls and graphics are likely to be like NWN only updated, basically, so that bit is more or less given. If you liked NWN, you're likely to like (like!) NWN2.

Re: NWN2

well...i didnt like the campaign in NWN1...

And norah it does matter quite a bit. If its a sucky campaign, and in general a sucky game, i might reconsider if i want to buy it. I dont support people who make sucky games tongue

Re: NWN2

So you'd skip the possibility of making our own gameworld because the basic campaign isn't to your liking? Sounds a bit... counterproductive, no?

NWN2's basic campaign will no doubt be a nice action-fantasy romp. That's what most people want, so that's how they make the game. I didn't buy NWN for the official campaign, though. I bought it because of the immense possibilities of custom content and modules.

If you don't like the game world, consider it buying the means to run our own gameworld... but don't buy it yet if that's all you're looking for. I don't know what the practical possibilities of persistent worlds are in NWN2 yet. That is still to be seen. Personally, I want to play the game and the custom modules that are guaranteed to follow its release, though.

Re: NWN2

To put it bluntly - if i got a feeling that the game isnt worth my money then i will most likely download it and give it a try before buying it.

They made NWN2 as a game - not as a tool for modders (if they did the tools would be even better then they are) so yes, i do expect a decent game for my money.

Re: NWN2

I got hyped enough about NWN2 and went out to buy my copy today tongue

I played it a bit but not enough to judge it yet...however my first impression is positive

ps. I will play it all weekend so i wont be much on irc big_smile

Re: NWN2

Woo! wink
Good to hear we have a positive effect on your judgement there, Oluf.
I received my copy today and I'm installing it as we speak. I'm going to try not to get too caught up in it though. Have to keep my wordcount up. wink

Hope the game doesn't disappoint you... or me. wink

I noticed there are several new features that would work great in a persistent world; things like enhanced crafting and dynamic housing.

Re: NWN2

taking a semi-break (ie restarting the game becuase i changed some options) so figured i would write a bit more about what i think of it so far smile

I havent gotten very far in the game yet, i am the type of person who likes to turn over every little rock there is! The good things i have noticed so far:
1) The storyline seems decent, might be a bit easy to figure out where its heading...but it might take an unexpected turn later on!
2) lots of classes and races
3) the grapichs are really good...if your comp can handle it!! (mine cant...)
4) voice acting in many places! In some ways and places this reminds me of KOTOR...which is good!

bad things i have noticed so far:
1) the camera is very very strange - after around 4-5 hours of gameplay i still havent gotten usede to it...
2) When i tried to patch the game to 1.01 the update failed...i guess this will most likely soon be resolved.

Re: NWN2

Mine won't arrive until November 8. sad
Stupid delays in Amazon.co.uk delivery. Well, at least they notify you and are very accurate 95% of the time.

It's likely. It seems fairly well thought-out, from what I've seen. Very different from NWN1 in that respect.

Oluf wrote:

Yep. The lot from NWN, plus various subraces. Drow, tiefling, aasimar, wild elves - you name it! I'm running an aasimar, myself. Always loved that race. Interesting classes as well. They seem to have gone more or less all-out D&D 3.5 except for some minor changes, this time. Quite nice.

Oluf wrote:

Mine can... almost. I'm running it with fairly high settings, and it occasionally gets choppy, but man... it's nice!

Oluf wrote:

I'm very picky about voice acting, and some of it is kind of wooden, at least in the beginning. Most is very good, though. That Ironfist dwarf is great!

The camera works like in NWN, but the game is kind of different, so you play it differently. I use driving cam, because I like being close to the action. Have a look at the options in your settings and figure out which of the four camera types you like best.

Oluf wrote:

It worked for me, though the patching takes a loooong time.

All in all, I really like the atmosphere and the feel of the game. It seems a lot more adventuresome (not as in adventure game) and intimate than the first game. NWN1 had entirely too much of Dungeon Siege in it for my tastes really, though SoU and HotU were better. Mainly, the custom content was what made that game worth its mettle. NWN2 seems a lot better on its own - so far!

My own gripes are that the controls feel more clunky than in NWN and that I think the game may falter in terms of replayability. Then again, who knows?

Further reports as we delve deeper!

Re: NWN2

oh yeah Icronfist is quite something smile
In a way not a very original char concept but he is still fun and interresting imo!

I have tried all 4 types of cameras and i still get crazy heh...guess i will have to experiment a bit more!

edit: Just thought i would let everyone know about this. I have found a way to get the patch the work. It seems that the game needs a lot of diskspace to apply to patch so make sure that the drive where nwn2 is installed on got around 7-8 gb space otherwise there is a high chance you will get an error.

Re: NWN2

I don't have the game... yet!
But, I just wanted to support Oluf, the patcher makes a complete backup of the game while patching, so you need some space for that smile
I read this elsewhere, something like your NWN folder will be around 11GBs while patching. Hope to get the game soon wink

Re: NWN2

Yes, NWN demands 6.5GB on it's own, and rumour has it the patch demands another 5GB... it's strange though. I heard about this from a friend, so I had a looked at the available space while the patch was running, and I never saw the space -used- over 500MB. I did have 7GB available though.

Re: NWN2

I looked at it while it was patching and it took at least 2.5 gbs.
A very strange way to patch!

oh well...off to play some more computer. Its so nice having a game that is worth playing smile

Re: NWN2

Woe is me with my stupid laptop's graphics card. Can anyone tell me if they included Fey'ri in NWN2? My favorite FR race!

Edit: I may just be able to squeak by playing NWN2 on this computer. the Xpress 200M card I have is equivalent to a Radeon X300, which is just slightly above the Radeon 9800 they list as being required to play. Woohoo, low settings!
