Topic: Our own, persistent headquarters

Yesterday, an idea popped up, concerning Ryzom Ring's ability to create our own areas and adventures.

How about we, at some point, create our very own persistent headquarters to be exactly how we like it? That could be done with an R2 adventure hosted permanently on one of our computers. It'd require that someone has a server to spare, but if anyone can provide that I'd be willing to do much of the map building work.

We could start by having a simple landscape, for example, with hunting grounds of our liking. Then we could start RPing a building project to cultivate that land as our own (I'm not suggesting we'd force our RP into some sort of pioneering work - this could easily be adapted to the requirements of the story). The relatively flexible ability to GM in that area would allow us to GM events for each other, using many of the regular GMing tools. In other words, we could have any adventures we desire. If done soon, this might even solve the diaspora problem, as you can enter these adventures from any of the capitals.

I haven't tested the editor yet, so some of this might not work.

Any comments?

Re: Our own, persistent headquarters

I someone have time for that, i think it may be a great idea.

Re: Our own, persistent headquarters

A great idea. As you said, we'd need to find a reliable server for it, but the premise is very sound! I'm going to try out the editor today and see how dynamic it is.

Re: Our own, persistent headquarters

I suppose that this would require a windows server, that would need to run Ryzom? Or is there some kind of dedicated server that would run on Linux?

edit: I just read that Nevrax will host R2 adventures for a additional fee (4.95€/month). I didn't read that on Ryzom's official site, though...

Re: Our own, persistent headquarters

Yes i read that if you pay an ammount they will host your map at all times.

Its a very good idea and I would be happy to help out both with the building and the gm'ing of such a thing.
I have tried the editor a little bit and was impressed right away. Very easy to do things yet it doesnt stop you from doing complicated quests and events etc.

Re: Our own, persistent headquarters

Sounds good about the server. 4.95/month doesn't sound unreasonable, especially if we manage to split it somehow (though it might be far less trouble for one person just to pay it (might even do it myself)).

Re: Our own, persistent headquarters

Yeah I'm in for a share of the 4.95€ a month. Someone still needs to design our area, but it's a great idea.

Re: Our own, persistent headquarters

As soon as we know what kind of place we're going to settle in, I can put together the landscape.

Probably the easiest way to share the payment would be to pay it in turns. Sending countless 50 centers around the Internet would be too big a burden.

And we should also verify what exactly it is we're getting for that money. Is it per Ring (which would be a problem if we wanted to swap it into another one for some special occasion)?

Re: Our own, persistent headquarters

Agreed, Kryigerof. I was thinking the same thing. There might be a problem with that if subscription needs to be linked to a specific credit card number, though. In that case someone's going to have to take the responsibility and then the rest will send compensation to that person in turn.

Re: Our own, persistent headquarters

Okay, just found out that the editor has some idiotic limitations:

The amount of (uneditable) base landscapes you can use is based on the amount of locations (respawn points) you've visited in the official world. Because my character hasn't left the newbie island, there's only those items found on the newbie island available.

The excuse for not letting me put, say, a house on my map, is that this is to ensure our knowledge of the Ryzom world and lore...

Sheesh...

Re: Our own, persistent headquarters

OK, but all this means is that we need to explore the mainland first to gather respawn spots? It sounds like a mission...

And I'm happy to help out with the costs too. Rebuilding an area where all four races can peacefully, to some extent, coincide would fit our general ideas. Where else would we be able to achieve such a goal? No doubt we'd run into problems in Ryzom from one faction or the other. It would certainly provide purpose for our RP.

I think it's a great idea smile

Re: Our own, persistent headquarters

It seems nice idea.

Of cause we need to go main land for it, but we should not rush it. I asume many of us are still "testing" the game in tutorial area?

Also traveling in land of Atys is no picnic. Basicly this means You can't travel at all from one races land to other races land, without having group of experience atys players escorting us. The enemies are "deadly" in many zones and they can't be easyly avoided. Usually it's better to contact some "older" players, who could make trek for it.

I could help contacting in main land for some older players and arrange the trek when it's needed. But we need to design when and how we gonna do it. Other ways we could lose contact, if we haven't allready done the "Friend lists"?

(( I have other older character in main land, who belongs guild of Nexus. ))

Re: Our own, persistent headquarters

Yeah, all of this sounds good, somewhere out in the future. But let's not rush it. We are all in the starting area yet, and we'll have plenty of time to get to know the game, ourselves and the others, before going for this.

And when we decide to leave the training area, I guess we should announce it some days earlier, so all who play as the same race can gather up and prepare. Should be good RP over these days as the characters prepare for a long trip too.

And yes, do remember to add all of us to your 'Friends' list, so we will not lose sight of each other smile

Re: Our own, persistent headquarters

I am still not convinced that i wish to pay per month for SoR....so lets not rush it please wink

Re: Our own, persistent headquarters

No rush for me, seeing as I can no longer RP with you guys 24/7 wink
