Sonic Mappers

Fist-sized devices used for finding out the internal physical structure of various solid objects such as machines. They must be placed as a ring (or better yet, complete 3D sphere) around the structure to investigate (the shape doesn't need to be regular). They will then send precisely modulated ultrasonic waves through the material to the other mappers on the other side, then analyse the structure based on the received signal.

Re: Lore: Technology

Radio Relay/Boosters

Small TAU-independent communication devices used mainly by explorers entering territory outside the necklink range. They relay radio messages sent on specific frequencies, allowing the "in" teams to communicate with the supporting "out" teams in the Middle Cluster.

Laudatur's Paradigm

Laudatur's Paradigm is a mathematical tool used for optimizing tests. It can be used in the testing of various different systems, including natural and computational systems. It uses the results of previous tests to plan the subsequent tests in such a way that the maximum amount of new information about the system is gained. The method is very powerful, often making it possible to reduce the amount of tests by many orders of magnitude.

An alternative to Laudatur's Paradigm - Kiefer's Formula - allows for human intuition to take part in interpreting the various results. In situations where the system is not easily quantifiable, Kiefer's Formula is often a better choice, but especially in theoretical mathematics Laudatur's Paradigm is beyond compare.

The downside of both Laudatur's Paradigm and Kiefer's Formula is that they usually require an advanced mathematician to apply correctly into each individual problem area.

SEAL-D Rooms

The SEAL-D (Security Enhanced, AINN Link Detatched) Rooms are used for sensitive negotiations you don't want others to spy on. Or you don't want the participants to take too solid information out about.

There are a number of SEAL-D rooms in various parts of the tower, administered by various rings. Often the secrecy is one-sided with one party visiting the other's room. In addition, Da Vinci Collaboration provides neutral rooms for others as part of their mission of facilitating communication.

SEAL-D Protection Levels

There are several settings you can use in a SEAL-D Room, offering various levels of protection. The administrator of the room decides the setting but it's relatively easy to verify by others.

Disabled: The SEAL-D Room is disabled, so no additional protection is gained.

Improved intrusion protection: The room provides improved protection against intrusions from outside, such as hackers trying to find out what's going on inside. Transmissions authorized by people inside the room aren't limited in any way, including recordings. By default, privacy is provided for all transmissions. This setting is the most useful when you trust those you're dealing with, or aren't speaking of anything particularly volatile.

Transmission scrambling: The purpose of this mode is to make sure none of the participants can provide outsiders with proof of the discussions taking place inside. Hence, random variation is inserted into all transmissions out of the room. This variation makes any video or audio recordings from within the room indistinguishable from forged data. The algorithm is advanced enough to prevent fixing the data by most means of data-correction. Dispite this, the data passes through in good enough shape to be comprehensible, so necklink conversations, for example, can be held with the people inside. After meetings in this mode it's usual practice to erase any electronic memory devices within the room with a controlled EM burst before lifting the scrambling (some rooms take backups of the users' necklink caches at entrance). This mode is most useful for meetings between ringleaders who don't want to be disconnected from ring affairs for extended periods of time.

Full seal: Plain and simple: no traffic in or out of the room is allowed. No amount of hacking can bypass the simple lack of electromagnetic connection between the room and the outside world. As with transmission scrambling, all data storage is erased before lifting the seal.

Atomic Storage Unit (ASU)

The atomic storage unit is the standard computer memory unit utilizing single atom energy states in storing data. They can store quite a bit of data. An atomic storage unit can manifest either as a standalone disc about 5x5cm or as an integrated component of a computer system. The standalone version can be read by various computer devices, including the RCI.

Terraforming Assistance Unit (TAU)

The Terraforming Assistance Unit is a limited scope variation of the General Assistance Unit (GAU) that was used for running the various automatic systems in the Technocracy. It's a complex networked (or "swarm) intelligence, consisting of thousands of autonomous units (AI Networking Nodes). Although each node can function individually to some extent, higher functions require the nodes to cooperate. The nodes also have a hierarchy with some nodes and processes dominating over others as long as they're in contact. The top nodes in the hierarchy are those of the TAU Master Processes.

The Sentience Debate

During the Technocracy, there was some who believed GAU was a sentient being. The more widely accepted notion was, however, that dispite its incredible qualities, it was still only a machine.

TAU (as well as GAU) is capable of finding new solutions to complex problems. However, the solutions are never truly novel - they're always a derivation generated from data and previous solutions. It can comprehend language and conceptual ideas (such as love) - and communicate them to humans - but the concepts bear no true meaning to it. It can create art, but it cannot have inspiration.
