Topic: URU-Live

because it deserves a topic of its own!

official site and forums: http://www.urulive.com/blog/

The story goes a little something like this: The time is now, the place is here (Earth, that is). In new Mexico, the ruined city of an unknown (to most) civilisation has been found (the D'ni civilisation). The official excavators are the DRC (D'ni Restoration Council), who will uncover and restore the city as they see fit. Then there's Yeesha, who'd like to see D'ni restored too, but has a rather different idea of how this should happen... Will you take the Journey?

The game: Like Seed, URU has no combat. Unlike Seed, it doesn't even have any kind of skill training and classes, which makes it even less like standard MMOs. Like Seed, URU will be heavy on background, storyline, and RP. Like in Seed, you will be able to influence this storyline, by your RP, and by the gameplay, which will consist for a large part of solving puzzles (This game is really an online adventure game, the first of its kind, yet it will also be an RPG). However, for those of you that flinched at the word 'puzzle', you won't HAVE to solve any puzzles unless you want to. Or you can do the puzzles with some friends. Or you can have said friends do the entire thing for you (you lazy shmuck).
Like in Seed, the gameplay will be tied to the RP, it will be intertwined. So it won't be like in so many MMOs, where the RP is but an afterthought, and where your RP will never matter to the gameworld and evolving storyline at all.
If, after trying it, the game won't be as described, hit me tongue.

Re: URU-Live

Ok...If URU becomes the game you speak of then this seriously sounds like the next mmorpg for me big_smile
Personally I like the idea of IC skills (makes it more "game" like...if you know what i mean :S ) but its not a big deal for me.

As I have understood it the devs will be in charge of the different npcs as well? The basic gameplay is about going around and discovering more of D'ni, and there are 2 different factions with different views on how this should be done?

(and if not you can slap me around for a bit. Heck, if not -I'll- slap me around. And Cyan. And Gametap)

The devs and people in their employ. They played some chars themselves last time around but there were also hired actors.
Discovering more of D'ni, and rebuilding a society, yes. We come not only to discover but to restore...
For now we have two different factions, but you can always make more. Even last time the choice between just two things didn't sit well with a lot of people, there's always those that disagree with both (or, more rare, but it did happen, who agreed with both), or those that don't care for 'politics' at all.

I think in the last Live the actors were definately setting the stage for a huge conflict. One of them had already instigated and participated in a riot, and left nothing about his opinions to the imagination in his journal (you could sneak into his private rooms and read it). Another one had gone missing and was last seen falling off a building with the building subsequently collapsing on top of him. However, in the end the players just didn't bite. They decided they had no need for violence, and instead a huge faction arose that tried to make peace between both sides. The actor came and apologised (IC). And then Live ended. So we don't know how that would have turned out, negotiations and talks were still ongoing at the time.

Re: URU-Live

Added two new links (first post) in the 'info about story/background'section.

One of them links to a very good and very concise post about what happened in URU / the Cavern before this (the new URU Live).

Re: URU-Live

Another good link I found, lots of info on the D'ni culture this time, instead of the backstory or history of events in the games and such.

At the above links you can download the D'ni font. If I ever want to write something in actual D'ni, not just transliterated, you'll need it to be able to read it.

A link to the IC version of forums for URU Live *points to the above link*.
It has only a small section for OOC. For the usual OOC game forums for URU Live, visit the URU Live official forums, mentioned in the first post, probably.

Re: URU-Live

Great news! *is excited and nervous*

When I finally make it to work tomorrow I will send out a major amount of invites. Please remember not to post in the general forum if you received a beta invite.

Thank you for your continued support.

We are still inviting people in for closed beta, but we are not inviting everyone who signed up yet.

The plan is continue to invite people onto the beta server until we reach a level we are happy with.

We are planning an open beta. Details on that will come in the next few weeks. However, if you are in closed beta you won’t have to sign up again for Open beta. It will take place on the same server.

Thanks

Re: URU-Live

Ok.
If I'm accepted into the beta, I'll take Eilis for a charname.

Do remember not to say anything about the beta itself, and whether or not you are in it.

Re: URU-Live

hehehe tongue

i guess it will be a while before i get in i signed up 3-4 weeks ago i think...

Re: URU-Live

if you don't get into the closed beta, you'll have to sign up for the open beta separately... But for now, there's still a chance that everyone who signed up for closed, will be invited before the open beta starts.

Re: URU-Live

For those of you who want to go play URU Live, or just URU, and who find the whole prospect of catching up in that gameworld a bit daunting:
here is something to make it a bit easier for you:

http://web.interware.hu/frenzy/uru/glossary.htm

A list of terms of the URU-lingo.
At least then you'll know what people are referring to.

Thank you very much for the link, they have it in hungarian, quite a surprise for me cool
Anyway, where can we find that imaginary KI-number?

Re: URU-Live

Well, if anyone is in beta, posting KI numbers here would be a violation...

So you could do it like this:
If anyone here is in beta, they could, possibly, say, all assemble at the Ferry Terminal at a certain time on a certain day. To be specified.
And from the people showing up, you could see who is in beta and who is not.

You don't have to betray being in beta at all for this, nor will you betray anything about beta: the game has always had the city in the cavern, and the Ferry terminal. You could be talking about Until URU or the offline game.

Re: URU-Live

One thing thats pretty strange about URU is how seriously they take the NDA...
I dont get it...imo its a really bad way to do buisness.

During the early stage of dev i can understand the need for a very strict NDA but not this close to release...

Re: URU-Live

It's their game, their choice.
I'm not bothered by it. A lot of the 'new' things can be seen on officially released game pics and such, and of the rest it's said, by everyone, including Cyan people themselves, that it will look just like the old URU. So really: people can just dive in Until URU or URU ABM, and there it is.
And the reasons they stated just a day or so ago, I can understand them, especially the one about if any kind of bugs became widespread: a lot of people would start screaming about the state of the game and bad release and such. There's always people that do that, that just want to show a game in the worst possible way, to a wide audience, for some reason. Cyan want it to be judged on the open beta or release. If people complain then, at least it won't be based on old bugs that have been long gone by the time of release.

Re: URU-Live

norah honestly i think most gamers who might have an interrest in URU are cleaver enough not to judge the game based on old beta bugs...

imo its a bad way to do buisness and there is no reason for enforcing the NDA as strictly as they are doing. I become very negative towards the company when they are as strict about this as they are...
The original reason for making NDAs are to protect the IP of the game, not to control peoples thought of the game

i know, their game their choice.... but that doesnt mean i should agree with their choice big_smile

Oluf wrote:

Why?
They did it for Seed. Would you have thought most gamers who were interested inSeed would do that?
Yet there they were, on the official forums, on other forums, on gaming review sites...

All of them judging the game on bugs etc present when the game was still in closed beta. Sometimes even when they hadn't played in 3 months, but they had played closed beta, they'd come and tell people they thought the game wasn't worth their trouble because of <insert reason here> which was how it was when they last played (3 months prior. in closed beta).

(just because people are good at spelling and grammar doesn't mean they won't be whiners or be clever enough not to judge a game by beta bugs tongue)

Re: URU-Live

Lets be honest here... people where mostly talking bad about seed becuase it had bugs (and lag! big_smile )at release... not becuase of what beta was like.
At least that is my impression! smile

Re: URU-Live

Oh no.
I saw plenty of people telling others that said they might be interested, that they shouldn't play the game, based on experiences they had in beta, and bugs and issues from beta.

And when the game was 3 months into release, they told people not to play it, stating issues from around release time.

Basically they grab any bad thing they get, relevant or not, and use it to discredit a game.
