Hello.

The campaigns's not dead quite yet, it seems. However, I feel some revisions in how we run it are in order:

At the moment, and possibly forever, the player characters are scattered all across the storyspace like seeds of daffodil in a hurricane. There are way many threads in my hands and I can barely knit properly with one. You might start to see where this is going.

From now on, each session will have a set of 1 - 3 or so focus areas, such as a ring, project or other storyline. Hence, some players will be central to the session while others may not. I'll try to balance this from one session to another, but there will be sessions during which your presense will not be required.

I'll announce the general topics of the session beforehand, as well as which PCs I consider most central. Other players may join those stories if they come up with some way to involve themselves actively (though it may not always work). It'll still be nice of you to keep your clients open during the sessions even if you're not in focus, in case you happen to be at your computer. (But don't waste limited energy by running your hardware idle, seriously.)

I'm hoping this way I'll be able to experience a little more of a story and a bit less of a mess. And it just might benefit you as well, through increased GM attention when it's your turn to be in focus.

I'll see if we can start this next week.

It's a turnip.

Actually, I've found lately that the satisfaction density of StSC has been low for me. Not exactly stressful but it takes a lot of time and inspires me little. So until further notice, I'll be taking a break, focusing on other RP activities for a change. I'm hoping that during this break I'll end up more inspired by StSC again.

No problem, I was going to cancel it anyway.

Next Sunday, no StSC due to me being busy. Also, I'm going to start another, lighter campaign with some real life friends in the fall, which means StSC will be on a twice-a-month schedule then.

Okay, due to Ropecon schedule, we'll move the starting time to 16:00 CEST. Everyone should be present at that time for the shortened session. Basically, I'll be presenting a situation to which you can react if you want or RP any non-GM-heavy stuff. Other than that, I'll not be stressing about the success, fairness or any other concerns of the session, before or during the session.

This week's session will be a short one, only revolving around one or two issues.

This is because my study project that's been taking most of my time for the last months is nearing its deadline and there's still much to be done. So I'm cutting back on any job-like activities like planning and running StSC until I can be certain I'll meet the deadline.

And more specifically: Mike, Relay, and Andrea at 13:00 CEST. The rest at 16:00 CEST.

Play this Sunday too.

Hussein - The Horizon
26.2.105

Okay, what the heck, I'll do it publically. It's not like people aren't already laughing their asses off every time they see me anyway. So, here goes:

I was having a dream last night. It started out nice and normal, with me making out with several hot ringmembers, in the Dawn Club. Then one of the girls whispered into my ear: "You're just dreaming, silly", and I was like "Just my luck!". And that's when things started to get strange.

First, I got this really nagging feeling in my necklink, like someone was checking out my location repeatedly. I looked around but the girls had vanished, leaving me all alone in the Dawn Club. All alone with the walls, that is.

I figured TAU had somehow logged into the club's projection system, because it spoke to me. "You've screwed up big time this time", it said. "That Chimbot you kicked yesterday was my personal concubine." I said I was sorry but it wouldn't listen. So, suddenly there was a huge wind and I fell into the holographic wall, where there was one of those really close close-ups of some Earth plants.

So now I was a tiny man in a huge world full of giant spiders and ants and stuff. So there was a lot of running in panic that's not really interesting, I think. I only got a moment's rest when Sebastian, who was sitting on a giant pink flower, told the ants go fix their anthill before it'd collapse. And he told the giant spiders to go chase the Lurkers and those criminals that were tried a month or so ago.

Then I was somehow alone again, working on some machinery that seemed to be melting away in front of my very eyes. That's when Felman walked up to me, the fresh young redhair that he's in the old recordings, like the one they showed us when Sebastian was suspected for those old things. The thing is, I'm pretty sure those recordings I saw never showed his boots. Because I'm sure I'd have remembered those ones. They were worn over his workersuit, and they reached up to his thighs, bright pink with purple spots. But I checked later, and found one image where his legs showed and that's what he was wearing. Maybe that was some speedgrowth heritage of his, from some time in the world where such things were fashionable...

Anyway, Felman told me the tower was in great peril and it was up to me to save the day. Too bad my floatbed cycle ended, and I woke up, so I can't tell more about this crisis. Maybe you can figure it out.

Oh man, now you're going to think I've made this up. Because that's what I'd think - it was all so weird. My reputation won't help, I guess. So I won't be insulted if you just ignore this altogether. But if you don't, please let me know if you figure out what any of this means.

Thrayn - The Jorian Reformist Party
12.11.97

The Jorian Menifesto - by Ann Pong Jory, founder of the Jorian Reformist Party on Earth (written during the fourth decade of The Technocracy)

This is the manifesto of the Jorian Reformist Party. It's born out of a deep concern about the direction - or more specifically, lack of such - mankind is taking. Most will see this statement to be in direct confrontation with the foundation of The Technocracy. This is not the case: the Jorian Reformist Party wishes nothing less than to undermine the core values of our society. We have, however, looked deep into those values, and what they truly mean to the prosper of mankind.

Part One

Liberty

The Technocracy prides itself with the citadel of individual freedom, and rightly so. The right for anyone to live as they please as long as they don't infringe on the freedom and wellbeing of others has been protected exemplarily by the governing system. The right for anyone to take part in any decicion-making that concerns themselves is a clear step forward from the ancient way of representational democracy.

Yet there are still things that deprive us of true liberty, now perhaps more than ever before. These shackes don't only trap each individual - they hamper our growth as a species as well. This time, we're not being limited by an outside force, but from within. Even the best of us are corrupted by petty personal desires of body and mind: social greed, laziness, plain selfishness, and most of all inability to look beyond the scope of our own lives. Many would say these things are a natural part of human existence, but so was warfare less than a century ago.

Wisdom

For more than a century, mankind has taken pride for a sustainable way of life. Underneath the wealthy life style our computers recycle every material, optimize every production chain, and steadfastly contain our consumption to limits that will allow life on Earth to prosper, theoretically, for countless millennia.

There's one resource we squander without a second thought, and it's ourselves. Our potential gets wasted on an endless cycle of sloth and hedonism. Where has humanity come three centuries after colonizing the moon? Mars. Europa. A few science stations and holiday resorts here and there in the solar system. Have we spoken of colonizing other star systems? Yes. Have we written sonatas and told stories about it? For centuries! Are we there?

Open-mindedness

Our society was and still is being born of scientific discovery. Our keen enthusiasm to explore and manipulate the world around us had brought us more and more advanced toys and tools without which there would be no Technocracy. When asked to look deep into ourselves, however, we turn into mental descendants of the pope who by god's command forbade Earth from revolving around the Sun. Making the world a better place is on everyone's todo list, but the idea of bettering humankind themselves is met with fear and condemnation.

Patience

Of the five virtues, patience is arguably the least observed in The Technocracy. Want something? Chances are the nearest sharepoint will have it within hours. Feel like meeting other people? Log into the social network and interact with anyone in real time. It's emblematic that so many can't bear the interplanetary chat lag.

Our political system itself hampers any attempt at patience. Legislation is passed at the whim of the masses, and the chaotic fluctuations in the vote flows makes long-term planning impossible. Look at the farce revolving around the official name of our society and you'll see what I mean.

What every one of us would need is first-hand experience that nothing comes free or cheap. The people who best understand this are those working at the frontier - polar regions of Mars or the few outposts on other planets. Even though it's now mostly automated, our infrastructure is the fruit of millennia of hard work by human hands. Shall we disrespect this legacy by taking it for granted? Or do we continue in the footsteps of our ancestors and elevate our species to an all new level of glory?

Solidarity

It is said that the abolishment of national borders was the final step in humanity's evolution towards a true global community. It was a major step but it was by far not final! It's true we haven't had a real war in decades but those who speak of a global harmony are not seeing clearly. It's true we've found more civilized ways to resolve our conflicts but petty disputes, pointless rivalries, and outright feuds between individuals and subcultures still blemish the idea of true solidarity.

If humanity is ever going to seige its rightful place in the galaxy as the bringers of life to distant worlds, the first step must be to truly unite. Only as one can we cross the vast distances, overcome the enormous challenges presented by interstellar colonization!

Part Two

This file would be yet another pointless piece of philosophy littering the internet by the Millions, if we didn't offer concrete suggestions to tackle the problems outlined in part one. These reforms aren't the most conventional but they're informed and thoroughly considered. When you peruse the paragraphs below, I only ask that you keep an open mind.

1. Personality Improvement Therapy

Personality Improvement Therapy, or PIT, is a collection of psychological, psychopharmaceutical, and surgical methods with the goal of changing a person's personality for the better. Before a vote banned the research, 134 volunteers subjected themselves to the therapy, myself included. The results were astonishing. Not only did the friends and aquintances of the test subjects report less friction in their social interactions with the subject (some responded negatively, describing the changes as abnormal or unnatural). More importantly, the subjects themselves reported content with their new state of being, after the initial period of disorientation. Most volunteers found themselves better able to focus on the things they deemed truly important, as they no longer were distracted by wanton moods, petty social issues, selfishness and jealousy...

The Jorian Reformist Party supports the lifting of the ban on PIT research and implementation. Everyone has the right to choose their personality, as long as it's in keeping with the benefit of th society. There's no good reason to prevent people from making themselves into kinder, wiser, and more hardworking people. In fact, we hold the firm belief that everyone should.

2. Experience Transfer

The internet allows us to transmit words and abstract ideas directly from one brain to another. However, the meaning in those transmissions is shallow, in that to understand the message, the receiver must possess the context for it. If you haven't experienced betrayal, for instance, it's hard to truly relate to someone describing it over the internet. This, we believe, is one of the main obstacles on the path to true solidarity.

We support more resources to improving the transmission protocols so that the transfer of feelings and experiences becomes possible. When this is accomplished, we suggest creating a global database in which we store an encyclopedia of feelings donated by volunteers. Through speedtraining, this will provide a common base of experiences for everyone, elevating our understanding of each other to a whole new level.

3. Long-term Decicions

New rules must be put in place to allow once-made decicions to stick. One such rule would be that no ruling can be undone by a simple majority vote until ten years has passed from the original vote.

4. Frontier Duty

Everyone must be encouraged to contribute to the colonization effort by working on our colonies and outposts. Incentives to this could include increased voting rights for those who've served a specified amount of time.

5. Space Program

Humanity's stepping out of its cradle is long overdue. New colonies and outposts must be established in the solar system. Measures to terraform Venus and the moons of Jupiter and Saturn must be researched. The vast resources of the asteroid belt must be excavated. And finally, the Seed program, aimed at colonizing the stars, must be given top priority.

The Jorian Reformist Party has been formed to push forward the five reforms outlined above. If you agree that humanity needs to rise up from stagnation and take its place in the infinite universe, we'll be please to accept you to our ever-growing ranks.

Oh, and tomorrow there's play. I'd like to advance some time tomorrow so I'd like everyone to be present at 13:00 CEST, and Norah at 12:00 CEST already.

The Naming Merry-Go-Round

The name of the governmental entity formed as the nations of the world united was, as stipulated in the agreement, "The Global Union of Democratic Peoples". The next year, it was shortened to "The Global Democratic Union", as a majority vote felt the reference to peoples as separate entities was outdated. The Global Democratic Union was the longest-surviving name of the global government: it took a full 11 years before it was changed to "Assiciation of Independent Citizens", then quickly to the simple and to the point, "Earth".

At the time of the launch of the Solidarity, there was an active unofficial committee, made up from people who at the moment had received most transferred votes on matters of governmental nomenclature. Due to constant fluctuations in the flow of votes, the power balance never stayed stable long enough for one name to stick around for long. The hobby, however, remained alive. As for people referring to the governmental entity, the name "The Technocracy" had long ago become the de facto standard.

It's unclear from how this rather ironic name originated, or how it gained the popularity it has today. It is, however, being used in most official and scientific texts (though usually with the option to display the current official name in its place). And that's how it was referred to in the speedgrowth training.

And yet again I have to cancel the next session. This time, it's my cousin's wedding.

57. Judas Unrequited (16.-25.1105)

You know what I heard? That Ishi never had any orders to torture anyone, she just made it up on her own, then put the responsibility on others and now Sebastian has to take the fall for her. I think she might even have done it on purpose, brought the whole Ring down with her, then left the Ring. Bet she was a plant for some other Ring that dislikes the Horizon. The Common Goods better watch out.
---
What's up with that Ishi going into the floatbed so flushing often?
---
Hey, you remember what Sinuhe and Aviah tried to say about Mira of the Scholars being one of the Lurker collaborators? Why would they say that if it wasn't true, huh? It's not like they're her personal enemies I think, and it was a weird place to throw out accusations otherwise. We'll probably never get to the truth of this. As usual.
---
I heard Berry complain she's been demoted to recruit?
---
After hearing all this, it's no wonder Zeven and Huo are no longer involved with Ishi. They probably ran screaming when they learned about what she'd done. Long before all the rest of us learned, of course...
---
Hah! not exactly a gentle and caring reputation. That has to be the understatement of the century.
---
You know Mike and Jaana are in love? It's like they're glued together at the hip.
---
That guy with the weird name... The Prophet. I think he's crazy, with his dreams, and now making posts and then saying he didn't make them and someone is posting under his name?
---
Mizuki seems to be back at her usual spot in front of the Window, just sitting there you know? Yeah, the one in charge of capturing and interrogating those Lurker collaborators. Must take quite some determination and harshness to do what she must have done. Maybe she's nursing her bad conscience up there?
---
Is he from column 6? No? I just thought, from the way he looked, you know. White hair and those freakishly large eyes...
---
Relay, Mike, Hansila and the rest are certainly strange - volunteering like that to Tyler's Ailment as test subjects- what are they trying to tell the tower? Lack of common sense?
---
Now we're torturing people as punishment for crimes. Why did they even put the Horizon members on trial if this is what we use as punishment?
---
That freak seems to have joined a real project. Just as pointless as his other one
---
Did you know that Mike, Ishi and Mizuki were from the same patch? They joined The Horizon at the same time, and now only Mizuki remains. Makes you wonder when she'll quit them as well.
---
If you can do something like that to your own patchmate, there has to be something seriously wrong with you. Really, I want nothing to do with her and I hope she dies in those tests.
---
Has anyone else noticed that Mark is no longer part of the Horizon? Second in a row and third in a short while, seems to be a steady outpour for that Ring, wonder what's going on...

Core Elevator Project

Contact Person: Oliver - Tower Engineering Society
Location: The Core
Time: Ongoing (since November 104)

Since the Prospectors are doing a lot of exploration down the Core lately, they've asked us to build an elevator that will replace their not-so-safe "Spider" vehicle. Later, we're hoping to finally start cleaning up the mess of junk blocking the core halfway down.

We need the usual folks for this kind of job - if you're qualified you probably know it.

Tyler's Ailment - the Recurrance

Contact Person: Khitasang - The Common Good
Location: The Common Good Hospital
Time: Ongoing - urgent!

We believed we had cured the hybrid DNA based skin cancer brought on us by Tyler's irresponsible actions. We assumed too much. On 5.1.105, we identified a second generation colonist as a carrier of the disease. She has been guarantined.

The tower population needs to be screened against this potent epidemic. Unfortunately, in its dormant state, the disease agent is very hard to detect by normal methods. New methods will need to be researched, as well as the ailment itself. It's possible, even likely, that it has mutated to resist the treatments developed during the original epidemic in 88 AA. Thus, research on a vaccine/cure is needed.

We seek advanced immunologists, genobiologists, and pharmacists, as well as generalist medical and biology personnel to work as assistants. In addition, we're going to need volunteer test subjects to act as control group. Even though the tests will be performed with maximum precautions, there's always risk of unforeseen side effects.

I need to stress this to everyone: this project is urgent!

2. Dangerous work - Some work in the tower is more dangerous than others. Exploration for one. The Prospectors have lost many good men and women charting the tower for us, looking for a way to the Lower Cluster, and so on. The proposed project to explore the outside is just a new continuation of this. Brave men and women will lose live and limbs for this, before it is over. Why not also use those who have been condemned? If they do their part, they will redeem themselves and can return to their old life. If they sustain injuries, then better them than Seeds who have done no wrong.

I'm sorry, Thrayn, but I must say I'm finding this suggestion pretty disturbing. The tower has survived so far because we take on the dangerous jobs as needed, instead of looking for excuses to move them onto the shoulders of others. I wouldn't want to be part of such a cowardly colony myself.
