So here goes for my char Eilis (me):

Mannerisms and voice information:

-    She tends to be just a bit stiff, not very loose, in how she holds herself and when she walks, though she often tries to keep this in mind and stand and walk more loosely. It will slip in sometimes though. Like for instance: when standing still, clutching her hands together in front of her, unless there’s something to lean against. Even the leaning against something probably won’t look very elegant. Just think geek.

-    She will not look you in the eye when talking to you. She’ll probably not even be facing you.

-    When talking to people she doesn’t know well (i.e. good friends and close family), she’ll display some tic-like behaviour with her hand: she’ll press her right hand or a few fingers to the side of her head right next to her eye (I’ll ask for a picture next time I do this and I’ll consider posting it tongue).

-    She’ll bite the inside of her lips and mouth, and pick at the skin around her fingers, in private. But she will probably slip up quite a few times and do it in public as well.

-    When sitting, she’s likely to move her feet, sometimes just the toes.

-    Her voice has been said to be rather flat when talking to people she doesn’t know well.

-    Her voice is low, for a woman’s.

Physical information that isn’t apparent in the game:

-    Eilis is 1.75 meters tall, you can look up what that is in inches yourself, I’m too lazy to do it.

-    She likes to wear kind of metal/gothic-ish jewellery, but the game won’t let you, at least not earrings and a choker at once, and only very bland stuff.

-    She has black hair, but she dyes it black, it’s actually very light blond, and roots will be showing quite often.
The hairstyle in game is close to the real hair, but not quite: it's actually just straight, and my hair is a bit longer than the game hair IRL. The game doesn't offer any other long straight hair than this, except in ponytails, and I never wear a ponytail.

-    If she forgets to wear her glasses she’ll squint her eyes quite badly when trying to see things that are farther away from her than 2 or 3 meters or so.

-    She’ll usually wear at least black mascara, and often also black eyeliner sort of around her eyes.

I’m roleplaying myself in URU (but with a different name).
In the game, though the face is customisable, and you can choose being skinny or fat (or anywhere in between), all chars are of equal height, and they all move and do emotes in the same way. URU is no different here than many other games. Games just cannot provide as much detail as real life.

So in this thread you can give that detail. We can then get a better image of the char in game, I’m sure we all have enough imagination to imagine the mannerisms and body language of the chars in game, even though it’s not actually visible in game.

Please do not give background info, personality info, and such things in this thread. That would be OOC information, that we won’t know if we haven’t met your char, or even if we have met them. Giving info on physique and certain mannerisms, though, is fully IC; the things that should go in this thread are the kind of things that would be obvious when you meet a person.

Please only make one post per character. You can update the info by simply editing the post, if it's needed.
Apart from that do feel free to comment in the thread, as long as you keep the descriptions to one post per character.

GameTap better get off their bloody asses and provide (legal) access for the 'internationals' now.

Yes, you hear that right. It's the page where internationals can sign up to play URU Live Open Beta!

Have fun everyone, and I hope to see your chars in the Cavern soon (if I can figure out who you all are tongue).

Go here for a full explanation of how the KI (and the interface) works: http://www.guildofgreeters.com/index.ph … ;Itemid=38

it's accurate, up to date, and even includes things like why the KI is named the KI.

I'll put up a full list of all emotes and chatcommands here, though:

[big]Chatcommands:[/big]

/shout

Put this before your statement and it will broadcast what you say to EVERYONE in the cavern, regardless of distance from you. (Unless there are less than five in the Age with you, then it won’t matter.)

/p <name>

Typing /p and someone's name will send a private message to that person. It will only work that one time, so if you want to hold a conversation, you may want to select their name from the KI display on the left-hand side of the screen or from within the Main KI window.

/reply

Putting this before your response will send the message to the last person to talk to you. Can be very handy when the person you're trying to talk to is not on any list in your KI, such as your Buddy list or the Age Players list. However, it can be very easy to have their name knocked away from you, so it is recommended to ask immediately what their KI number is.

/clearchat

Does exactly what it promises, it removes all chat text from your KI windows. Very useful.

/startlog

Begins a file recording your chat text. The file will be found in your Log folder with the name Chat.0.log. It should be noted, though, that subsequent logs will only go up to 3, and then the program will start back at 0. So if you want to keep them, save them to another folder quickly.

/stoplog

Stops the chat log.

Greydragon posted over at the URU Live forums, that he'd set up the internationals sign-up page today.

The servers are already up again, so those of you in the USA/Canada, and those of you who were beta-testers before this, can already login again, the normal way, that you logged in before this too.

It's starting up again the 20th, in the URU Live open beta.
But on the 19th, there will be special events, as well as a chat with the DRC, on the D'mala Until URU shard, to round up the old story, and start off the new one.

After this, D'mala will cease to be the Story shard, where things are canon, and where the RP is (if any). URU Live will then take over, and once again be where the action is.

I'll start being IC again in URU Live starting the 20th. I won't be on D'mala for the event on the 19th, because I've got a birthday to attend that day.

The cave was originally discovered in 1991 by Elias Zandi and another person who's name I cannot remember. They authorized Cyan Worlds to create the Myst games that would inform the public of their discovery of another culture. Elias Zandi subsequently died somewhere in there. When Uru was first released in 2004, the DRC had been working to restore the cave since '99 (well, Sharper had been, was reading his journal the other day). I think Joshua Zandi had something to do with the announcement, because as the son of Elias Zandi he technically owns the surface and the Cleft. He fought a legal battle with the DRC to bring people down, and might have announced it to the world. When people heard about this, they either felt a connection to D'ni or not, but those who did were drawn to the cavern no matter what. If you're in the cavern, you probably felt drawn there for reasons you don't understand.

That or your an insane player trying to act as one of the DRC, but ignore those folks, the DRC is Cyan employees.

The son's name is Jeff, afaik, though smile.
Elias left the restoration of the city to the DRC, his own organistation.
He left the land that the city is under, to his son.

Explorers are drawn to the city of D'ni in a very 'close encounters of the third kind' kind of way.
Zandi the second is then there at the volcano and cleft, to tell these explorers there is a city and a Yeesha waiting for them.
In the old Prologue, all us explorers got an IC invitation from Zandi, but that is not why you went to D'ni, it just gave official access to those that had gathered at the cleft.

Yeesha more or less gives you a choice: my side, or 'theirs'. The theirs not being very clear, but was always taken by most to mean the DRC. Now, however, it's not so sure that the DRC are the other side Yeesha talks about.
She asks you to take her journey ('consider it a quest. No, a Request.'). Up to you if you want to do so or not, and even if you do, that doesn't necessarily mean you've chosen Yeesha's side, it just means that at least you were willing to hear her out, more or less.
So I guess most reasonable people would take her journey, and then make up their own mind afterwards.
If you don't take the journey you go straight into the city.

Cyan's idea was that people play explorers, and not just that, they play themselves. Only, as explorers of an ancient city, with some magic and sci-fi technology. Myst games are a sci-fi/fantasy mix.
It's, of course, not mandatory to play yourself, you can RP any other personality as well. However, you are an explorer. You're not a D'ni, you're not a DRC member or engineer. Impersonating either of those is impersonating a Cyan employee. It would be like saying you're a part of TSR, in Seed. You just don't do it, it's lame.
Not to mention according to Cyan's EULA, it's actually illegal as well.
But even apart from that, you shouldn't want to do this. The kind of people that usually do this, are the kind of people that cannot stand the idea of being someone that's just like everyone else. They feel that their char should stand out from the crowd, without them even putting in any effort: by the character's title and profession. That's fine, but if you want that, you're in the wrong game. In URU, you're one of many, and if you want to stand out, it will have to be in some other way: creativity, heavy political involvement, being the best at a lot of puzzles and always solving them first, being well-known for helping people out. All those are ways people can stand out and have stood out from the crowd in the past. There are probably other ways as well. (being a complete lunatic perhaps, or being well-known for being annoying tongue).

So, story starts on the 20th again, and I've thought of some things regarding neighbourhoods:

1- If I do create a neighbourhood, and want us all to recognise it, it will be named just 'Seeds'.

2- I might create a neighbourhood called something else entirely, because that would fit in with the RP better. In other words, I won't make a neighbourhood with a Seed-reminiscent name if the RP does not lead there. Even if it would be nice to have a place we'd all OOC-ly recognise.

3- It's not certain by any means that I even will create a neighbourhood. I might join another one, go without one for a while, or stay in my randomly assigned 'hood. Where ever events and RP take me.

So, I don't know about you guys, maybe one or all of you will create 'hoods?

And even then: I don't know any of you, wouldn't know what you looked like or what your real names would be, or your names in URU. Even if I knew you all, how would we meet? Just by chance?
Once I go down into the cavern I'll have no computer, and certainly no internet.

I say, we don't set up anything too artificial, because that won't be IC.

But, if say Norah goes ahead and make her, what was it, Seeds of the Great Tree? neighbourhood, or some other thing, and since it seems explorers get assigned random neighbourhoods, unless they chose themselves, we could say we 'randomly' ended up somewhat together, and then RP it naturally from there.

You get assigned a neighbourhood, period.
Then after that, you can decide to switch 'hoods or create your own.
If I do make a 'hood it will probably be called just 'Seeds'
However, it may not at all make sense for me to make my own 'hood once I'm in game IC-ly.

Sandling wrote:

Tantavalist, just go for the open beta. Don't you want to try exploration for free? And we need to get a Seed neighborhood set up. big_smile

Actually, I'm not sure that would be very IC. After all, story starts, and we'll all be IC. Do I even know you all? From where do we start? Do we go for semi-chance meetings?

Now would actually be a good time to decide on it, we have a few days.

I also quite like little useless RP props that your character can wear/carry or sit on, for instance.

There are benches in Eder Kemo in URU, that are interactive so that you can sit on them if you click them.
Same in WoW: tables and chairs in inns that you could go and sit at. WoW, though not exactly RP heaven, got a lot of things right in the props and clothing department.

As for a quest structure for fighting or crafting? I don't think you really need any of that stuff. Not as we usually see it, anyway.
In URU, an NPC would just request you to do something. There was no quest log, no nothing. You could just... go do it. Or not. Much more like RL. Someone asks you to do something, you don't have any kind of log, it's not like 'bring me x amount of this' or 'kill  and y for me' and then you get 'this set reward.'
Even if the quests are not repeatable, in that form they feel a bit silly.

You really don't need skill structures and economy either. That depends a bit on the game though. If there's no combat you don't need a combat system. These kinds of things, fighting, death, economy, skills, cosmetic feaures, they vary too much from game to game. I don't feel that they inherently have something to do with RP.
In Seed we had no combat system.
In URU we don't have any system, really. And no one misses them either, they're just not needed.

I like NPCs that have actors behind them, but you can do a lot with artificial NPCs too.

In my ideal MMO for RP, I'd want as many people to come check out the game as possible. But of course, I wouldn't want to be swarmed by OOCers. And I don't think perma-death or lack of graphics are the answer. You punish everyone with that, not just the targets.
I think GMs might do a good job. Not having many features in the game that are much fun to do when you're not RPing would help too.
Seed's gameplay frankly wasn't much fun if you didn't RP with people at the same time.
In URU, all that is left for you to do, if you don't follow the storyline and get involved, is solve all the puzzles and look at the ages once or twice. Not too exciting either, you can only do that once, really. Though of course, you could just use it as a chatbpx with graphics. But I doubt many would do that once they have to start paying for it.

Ok.
Big news: Open Beta will start on the 20th of December!

We just read that it should be accessible for all. USA and Canada people will go through GameTap, and GreyDragon will put up a link for international people (from certain countries, which are on a list).

I will link to a thread on the URU forums, look for posts by Randomos and GreyDragon, those will have the info in them. The first post has a lot, but is later on in the thread further explained, and added to.
