I used to have the same problem, for years. You could ask your relatives or friends to subscribe to a game for you, and just give them the cash in advance. And some games let you activate the free month with your debit card number, if they don't do a proper check on the card before any charges. You could also get an online friend to activate your account for you, since the account details don't save the full credit card number. Just give them your game account password and have them subscribe (and cancel so there are no recurring fees). You can then change your password afterwards.

EDIT: Also, christmas is coming, maybe you can ask Santa for a subscription to something... wink

Once I join an RP faction, I'll ask if they can give me some buddy keys (for the 10-day trial). That might be a while off yet though, as there are lots of RP factions of varying hardcore levels to choose from. If you're in a hurry, the box version is $10 on amazon and download version $20 on Direct2Drive. Box version should give you 1-3 buddy keys so it would definetly help in giving people the chance to try the game out for free.

I have to hype some other features yet:
-community on the Syntax server is excellent, you get advice and free stuff all the time
-you can explore every building and every room in the city (excluding mission areas)
-the combat interlock system makes for some stunning wire-fu animations
-crafting is simple and everyone can do it without a separate grind (good thing in my opinion but our crafter peoples might disagree)

Some bad things:
-many of the roleplayers are new and don't stay in character consistently, or talk about game mechanics in-character
-there are OOCers at major gathering points
-some things that render a window into the game, such as reading in-world newspapers take a long time to load
-lots of shameless recruiters for factions
-not a lot of special moves for low-level combat (though the hotbars fill up quickly with other kinds of abilities)

I'm Thuong on the Syntax server if you want to talk to me ingame.

It's really very adjustable. I bet it'll run just fine on the minimum specs.

As some of you might know, I've been playing some MxO as of late. I like the look and feel, unlimited character respecs, cheap clothing and abundance of roleplayers. I'm on the Syntax server, because the "unofficial RP server" Linenoise merged with it some time ago and brought all its roleplayers along. Let me know if you want to join me.

Role-Playing
The Matrix Online makes it very easy for a person who wants to Role Play their character to do so. People seem more likely to role play in this setting than in your typical fantasy or medieval setting because they don't feel as silly doing it. Either that or they're not as worried about screwing something up; such as should I use a 'thee' or a 'thy' here? In the Matrix Online it's a modern setting so role playing your character could mean as little as acting ingame as you would in every day real life. And if you wanted you could even take it as extreme as you wanted.

The Storyline Events definitely help with the role playing aspects of the game. Interacting with known entities from the movies does a lot to make one feel more in touch with their character. The different factions also go a long way in this aspect; giving the player several diverse options of play style to choose from. You could be the determined Zionist, struggling to survive in the unstable peace after the war. Or maybe work for the Machines, trying to reinstate their dominance over the Matrix. And last but definitely not least you could work for the Frenchman which has a kind of organized crime feel to it. -MMORPG.com Matrix Online review

The Rome persistent world roleplay server for NWN2 is going live this saturday (the 9th). They have some interesting systems in that will make the gameplay very different from what most servers offer, for example:

-permadeath
-ultra-slow levelling
-no magic at all (historic setting)
-healing restrictions
-political and commoner RP encouraged (especially)

If anyone is interested, check out the site at www.nwn2rome.co.uk and post here to discuss. smile

What!!! Dibs on Lord's Believers!

Also if anyone wants to play MoO2 I'm game for that too.

In my opinion, Forgotten Realms is the way to go. If you make a different setting you just end up having to cut out half the game or rename things, and under all that artificial twisting it'll still be Forgotten Realms. There's plenty of room in the FR lore to create any atmosphere that you want, and plenty of room to be unique, so I don't really feel the need to cover it up.

Tomorrow, Saturday the 28th, at 6 PM CET, I will arrange an introduction to Second Life for roleplayers. We will take a look at the game's numerous roleplay-friendly features, tour a few roleplay settings OOC and finally play a session ourselves.

Instructions for participants:

First, you will need to download the small SL client here and make a Second life account by following this link. Do this as soon as you can, to give yourself time to finish the tutorial and get your bearings before tomorrow's event. A basic SL account is 100% free, but you will need to submit credit card details to verify your identity. During the account creation process, you will be asked who referred you to Second Life. Put down "Frehiard Walcott" as your referrer and I will forward the referral bonus L$ to you in full.

Once you get ingame, either search for a group called "Seed Community" and join it, or wait to be invited into it. Then you will be able to participate in group chat and receive ingame notices about the event.

I'd just like to quickly point out that Darkhawk's humorous comments about the Matis guild are entirely inaccurate and we'll be making our own introductory thread in due time.

Second Life.

I think we should make several guilds in SoR, just as we had several rings in Seed.

And if we move anywhere I think it should be to Second Life, because it:
-has no grind
-is free with the exception of owning land
-has more different emotes and items than all other MMO's combined
-offers by far the best options for creating and customizing, even scripted objects
-has a unique atmosphere that every broad-minded individual should experience
-has a tiny client, under 50 MB, so it is easy and quick for everyone to try out

I think we should keep the ingame channels IC by default, double parenthesis (()) denoting OOC lines in between. For longer OOC conversations there is always IRC.

Here's what I think:

Option 3 is just unnecessarily crippling the RP. The combination of magic and technology on Atys is advanced enough to call for more reasoning -not- to have long-distance communication than to have it, at least on the Karavan side. If your character doesn't have a way to communicate remotely with his team or guild, you can move the /p and /g chats into separate tabs or disable them entirely. Basically we all decide for our own characters, yet have a clear and fluent system.
