I've been pondering some ideas for a cyberpunk MMOG that involved both permadeath and Seed's injury system. Another option was, even after your body was (almost) completely destroyed, you could "go cyborg", gradually building a new body - provided you could somehow get your brain saved. Even after that, you could successfully die, but that'd be pretty hard.

Another possible option is a system from a Russian sci-fi novel I read some time ago. Basically, there was a way to buy "resurrection". It costed pretty much (But was affordable), but you could only have one "resurrection" at a time. If you ever died, you were immidiately reconstructed at one of the "resurrection" centers, retaining memory of all but the last couple of minutes before dying.
In a MMOG, this would mostly save a character from accidental dying, but if someone would ever decide to kill him for good, that wouldn't be too hard.

Permadeath is a good thing in a low-combat game, but it's hard to implement correctly. Random/technical (Lags and the like) deaths shouldn't be allowed, and generally it should be hard to actually die. If a game is heavily combat-oriented, however, permadeath just isn't the way.

Actually, Seed's injury system seems to be the best for that - let's say a character dies if his pain, trauma and depletion meters all hit 100. It was pretty hard to reach these levels even with several injuries, given a good supply of meds. I can't see why a similar system can't be used for combat.

It's all been said already. There were three big things in Seed that made me come back. The roleplay - being a major part of the gameplay, the plot - evolving and being pushed forward by player characters' actions, and the style - I guess it was the most stylish MMOG I ever played.

((Aww, another event I'm going to miss. I have some problems and am incapable of playing games requiring any mental effort. Hope it all passes soon and I can finally return for good.))

Happy Birthday!

True, classes are a bad idea. Especially strict ones, like in D&D. On multiple occasions I failed to realize a character concept just because it didn't fit one of the classes available.
But they have one benefit: they save time for creation. That's not much of a benefit, actually, if all the players know the rules and can create their characters beforehand - but it comes in handy when there are newbies in hand.

In MMOG's, classes are definitely a bad idea, resulting in lots of secondary characters. Crafting classes are usually most affected, as are hard to level-up (Think Ragnarok's merchant and Lineage's Dwarves). And phrases like "Wait a sec, I'm gonna relog as my crafter" are seriously immersion-breaking.

I am returning now. I can't even for sure tell why I suddenly lost my interest in Ryzom - probably it was just getting interesting when I left. I guess I've not managed to reach a sort of union with my character, which definitely is necessary for good roleplay.

Anyway, I don't really care what game we play as long as there are a good world, a plot and a decent roleplayer base so I don't keep playing with the same people. Quite a lot of wishes, eh?

Ok, now that big patch, called "teh ZOMG patch" did bring a lot of stuff. The game's a lot more fun, as battles are no longer tied to gate camping and all gears recieved 4-6 new skills.

Hm, I have a level 26 M-gear and I think it's not harder to grind then an A. Of course, harder than I or B, but you still do your weapons' default damage (+50% from your own buffs), have a good defense and can repair yourself!
And keep an eye out for the patch, maybe it'll become easier after it.

What options do we have besides Zion?

I didn't have a card for quite some time, which was the sole reason for not playing official/paid MMO's. Basically, I got one just to play Seed back in April. Still, not everything accepts Electron, and it's a pain to use it for I-net.

I think I may go through the trouble of getting something like PayPal and subscribing to a game for someone, if that'll be any help.

Oh. Then I think I should humbly ask for one *^_^*

What about non-RP games, including MMO's? Something along the lines of Guild Wars, for example?

For one, I've found a pretty good thing called Space Cowboy Online. It's basically a grinder with a strong action/flying element: though level and equipment does play a major role in the outcome of a battle, skills do matter a lot. You get to pilot a Gear (Basically a jet fighter) in a war between two factions.

What makes this game stand out is it's "light" gameplay and a pretty good, although rather aggressive, community (At least in Joumus ANI). Good, that is, if you don't mind some pushing each other and lighter /b/tard humour.

The game is getting a serious re-vamp this week, featuring completely new territory battle system and new skills. Quite worth a try, IMHO.

If you decide to give it a try, start playing on the Joymus server and select ANI as your faction. I'm a level 57 A-gear pilot named Wirt (How surprising!) - always glad to help with some tips or items.

Buddy keys? But you still need to buy the game so someone can give them to you, right?

Wow! Somebody who likes Deegan humour! I don't really like that comic's plot and drawing style, and that pretty much keeps me from reading it. Great humour, though.

This may be interesting. I'd play it for a while for my "research" if there is some kind of free trial.

OOTS's the best! I also like those:
Elf Only Inn - after two years of inactivity, it started updating this September. I liked the old fantasy chat room theme a lot more, though.
Sinfest - not gaming-related, but still pretty fun.
Concerned - Half-life 2 parody, now finished.

I don't think any NPC's who don't have a living person (GM) behind them are useless and pointless. Same goes for quests: tasks for the PC's should be rewarding by themselves, and the closest thing to a quest would be mastered and not recurring (Think of the tree in Seed).
Skill systems and character development are IMHO needed - I like to know there are people who can do things better than my character as well as worse. But (I think it was mentioned here earlier) lower skill levels should be playable and useful by themselves and actually more needed than higher level (Example: a Master Smith can forge a Great Sword for the Mighty Warrior to defeat the Fearsome Beast with. But who's gonna make pots for him to eat from and shoes for his horse?).

The best way is to either keep non-roleplayers out or make them roleplay. Hidden skill levels, reducing the grind factor and the amount of numbers involved in the game will all further this cause.

Well, I have some articles about MMOGs I'll eventually translate into English. I'm a pretty quick learner, so I think I'll get the hang of an editor's work fast enough if it's needed.
