Deepened Human Genome Project

Contact person: Chia Pao - Servants of Evolution
Location: Labspace
Time: Ongoing

Description:
We're in the process of creating a comprehensive map of the various interactions of our genes by using advanced gene sequencing and amino acid interpretation techniques.

We need people with the ability to think beyond the conventional, to find solutions no one's thought of before. Our specialty areas are biology, cybernetics and genetics, but we work also with mathematics, physics, and chemistry.

What do you folks think about having character classes in a game? What good class systems have you encountered? Bad ones? Why were they so? How about classless systems?

Personally, from experience in tabletop roleplaying, I don't like much anything that places limits on the character concepts you can device, or makes some concepts much weaker than others. In D&D it seems to me you're asked to pick a character concept from the huge amounts of sourcebooks and tweak a little, while I want to create the concept from scratch and then realize it within the game system. Generally, I find that the scope of human difference is so great that no amount of classes can cover all possible concepts, and thus, classes are a Bad Idea!

So... how about you?

I feel that if we want to keep this community going, we need more and better discussion here on the forums. Most other roleplaying-related (not MMORPG) forums have all kinds of topics ranging from off-topic chit-chat to philosophising about different roleplaying methods, theories, game systems, you name it. On this board it seems right now that the most interesting thread is the image game.

So, any thoughts on how to get more conversation going? The obvious answer, of course, is for me to start some threads, but I find it hard to come up with interesting topics. So, what kinds of things would be interesting to the MMO roleplaying masses?

Lower Cluster Exploration

Contact person: Mihailo - Da Vinci Prospectors, Oliver - Tower Engineering Society, Tino - The Horizon
Location: The Core
Time: Ongoing

Description:
We're looking for ways downwards from our current habitats. A lot of very important equipment is located below us, not the least of which are the Speedgrowth Chamber, The Reactor, and Storage Chambers 1 to 4.

So far we've met many obstacles on the way down. Since the Tower was designed to be maintained by the Chimbots, there are few passages large enough for humans to traverse. In addition the storm caused serious damage down there - it's a miracle of engineering that the Tower hasn't collapsed altogether. Nevertheless, huge leaks of radiation, as well as toxic and corrosive substances, plague many of the areas. One of the main power conduits seems to have been severely damaged as well, causing massive, random power spikes around the machinery, making exploration a deadly business.

We need specialists in Tower Construction as well as general Engineering to analyze our data to find the likeliest routes downwards. But in particular we need explorers. We don't lie to you, it's a very dangerous job - 7 of our 24 explorers have died so far. Any understanding on the Tower's technology is a great help for an explorer, but above all the job requires nerves of steel, patience and caution.

Location: The Pit
Time: Completed

Description:
We're planning a big operation to clean the Pit from the Gray Algae that's been contaminating it. We need anyone who has access to appropriate tools and safety gear to participate!

Please remember that until that time the Pit is still off-limits to everyone!

We're playing on Sunday February 11th, at 17:00 GMT. (Earlier because I need to go to school in the morning.)

TAU Basecode Project

Contact person: Cassia - Dreamers of Gaia
Location: Everywhere
Time: Ongoing

Description:
We're working on recovering the lost knowledge on the workings of Terraforming Assistance Unit. Having exhausted the databases we have on hand, we're using reverse engineering to do this. We monitor and experiment with TAU's processes to decipher the very complex programming of it, working up from the very basic protocols.

We've already gained understanding on protocol levels 1 to 36, which has allowed us to program our own functions into TAU. However, we estimate we need to learn at least up to level 52, before we can start changing TAU's own processes. Since the complexity of these protocols increases with each level, we estimate several years of research to accomplish this milestone.

We need specialists in AI hardware and AI software. However, more general experience on hardware and software will also be useful.

Processor Core 17 Restoration Project

Contact person: McGregor - Tower Engineering Society
Location: Silo
Time: Completed

Description:
We're going to do a large scale restoration job on the TAU Processor Core 17, located in the Silo in Labspace. This project is of utmost importance, since the Core is used by many of the TAUs AI processes, as well as the research stations in Labspace. Right now the core is working at only 65% capacity.

We require specialists in hardware to repair/replace the many circuits fried by the lightning strike. We also need skilled software engineers and AI specialists to reinstall many of the basic AI computing protocols.

Completed on 9.11.104: The core is now running at 92 % capacity - the best we can reasonably hope with current level of tools and spare parts.

Oh, and yes, I was in Seed for the roleplaying too. And the ability to have an effect on the storyline.

There were GM characters people knew, so if you had some idea you could go talk to them. Or just contact a GM on IRC. Or post something on the boards. Of course, the GMs couldn't satisfy everyone's wishes, so usually you would have to convince a lot of others to support you. And if you did, the GMs were even likelier to learn about it.

We at Servants of Evolution have come up with a perfect solution to this problem: Instead of building new floatbeds to serve our ever-growing need of sustenance, we should adapt ourselves in such a way we no longer need them in the first place. But instead of reactivating our primitive digestive functions, that require the growing of edible foodstuffs, we must device ways to directly harness the energy we have in abundance.

I'm talking about the field of cybernetics and surgical alterations. We could device a way to install a Compressed Nitrogen Cell in our bodies and use advanced nanotechnology to convert its energy into a form usable by our cells. The solution is elegant and doesn't require huge constructions or access into the Lower Cluster.

Of course, this project would require a lot of scientific work to become reality, but if we put our minds to it, there's no reason for it to fail. Please contact me if you're interested in helping in any way.

Hai. I understand. I am new and do not know everything yet. However, this project, to learn more about how TAU works and be able to modify is programming, is still important. Are there such programs ongoing?

I believe the TAU Basecode Project, that The Association of Scholars is doing with Dreamers of Gaia and a few others, is what you're looking for.

The problem in understanding TAU's programming is that it's self-evolving. By now it's become in many ways different from the original TAU, through learning. And while it learns it generally becomes more and more complex. But we have reached good results, starting from deciphering the radlock processes enabling us to configure them to cure the Aufer lesions.

Mizuki, do you have any idea what kind of obstacles there are between us and the Lower Cluster?

1) Tons after tons of machinery that was never designed to be passed through by humans. We'd practically have to dig through a kilometer of titanium, glassteel, creep plate and whatever. Not to mention cutting through vital machinery.

2) Collapsed Chimbot tunnels preventing access to certain areas even for them.

3) Heightened levels of microwave and radioactive radiation, as measured at the upper levels, heigtening when you go downward.

4) Malfunctioning terraforming machinery causing huge power spikes.

And these are only the ones we know about. Believe me, we've tried to find ways down ever since we discovered Labspace two and a half years ago. The furthest we got was 240 meters below the Shaft before the explorer was killed by falling through the floor into a pit.

So I say once again: let's stop wasting time and continue the floatbed project now! The last thing we need is another competing project!

Mira - Association of Scholars

To Mizuki:

The problem with your suggestion is that TAU has been severely fragmented. The processes in our cluster have no contact with the processes in the Lower Cluster where the speedgrowth takes place. So even if you did manage to create such a program it wouldn't do much good if you can't install it in the Speedgrowth Chamber. And as has been discussed in other topics, it's not in the near future for us to bypass the massive collapsed spaces separating us from the Lower Cluster.

Your idea is a good one in principle, but I'm afraid you as a new colonist don't yet have a full understanding of the extent of the problems in this Tower.

Mohale - The Association of Scholars
